This year's Roseburg-Sutherlin Christmas Bird Count will be on Saturday, December 17, 2022.   We are a little short on counters so are looking for a few more people who are familiar with most birds in our area to help with the count. The way it works is you are assigned a particular area within the count circle, given a tally sheet, and you go count all the birds you can find in that area. It can be helpful to bring a friend along to do the tallying for you. At the end of the day, you’re invited to the gathering at the Roseburg Public Library.  Details about that event are in a separate post.

If this sounds like something you can do and would enjoy doing, please get in touch with Matt Hunter, who is the compiler this year. You can find more information, instructions, reports of past counts and more at

More general information about the Christmas Bird Count can be found on the National Audubon website.

What is the Christmas Bird Count?

Want to help the folks doing the count this year?  We can make that happen!

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is an annual event in December of each year during which individuals in communities all over the United States spend one day counting bird species within a defined area.

At one point in our history, it was a day when hunters went out and shot as many birds and other animals as they could!  Then some folks (members of the newly formed Audubon Society) thought to change the tradition to a bird census instead of a bird kill!

There is a CBC in Douglas County each December.  This year we are inviting interested volunteers to come help us with the post-count event at the Roseburg Public Library on Saturday, Dec 17th.  Setup starts at 3pm; counters start arriving around 4:30 and we wind up around 8pm.  The folks who have been birding all day will come there to tally their days numbers and report them.  We want to serve them a nice meal and find out what they saw.

If you would like to help us with the post-count event, we need help with setting up, providing food (the menu will be soup, salads, bread, appetizers, goodies for dessert, beverages), & cleaning up after the event.  We’d love to have your help AND you can see what the CBC is all about!

Please contact me for more information and to sign up!
