Seasonal Travel

Each season brings its own unique experiences to the Umpqua Valley. From embarking on thrilling river adventures during the summer to immersing yourself in the fall harvest season, carving up the snowy mountains in winter, or admiring the vibrant wildflowers along a meadow hiking trail each spring, there is something for everyone in every season in the Umpqua Valley.

Spring:

The valley comes alive with wildflowers and the oak leaves start to bloom out. The weather during spring can be a bit unpredictable, with rain, sun, overcast, and even the rare snowstorm. Plan accordingly for the unpredictable weather. Popular springtime activities in the Umpqua Valley include hiking, golfing, fishing, and birding.

Summer:

Hot and dry weather bakes the valley during the summer, while the nights often bring cooler temperatures. The North Umpqua River is a great place to cool off, so be sure to bring a swimsuit and an inner tube. When swimming, floating, or kayaking the river, always be aware of rapids and the fact that the North Umpqua River is primarily fed by reservoir water, which can be very cold, even late into the summer. This season is also a busy time for events here in Roseburg, so be sure to check out the Annual Events & Festivals Page for details.

Summers in the Pacific Northwest have an increased risk for wildfires, so when enjoying the outdoors please follow all fire restrictions. Air quality information can be found here and detailed wildfire information can be found here.

Fall:

As the autumn trees turn golden hues, the evening temperatures start to drop, creating warm days and cool evenings. The fall is the perfect time to grab some Umpqua Valley-grown ingredients at farm stands around the valley for your upcoming holiday meals. Pumpkin patches, U-pick apples, and more await you at local farm stands.

Winter:

Although Roseburg experiences only one to two snowstorms per year and the snow rarely sticks on the valley floor, the higher elevations can accumulate snow on the roads. Be sure to check Trip Check for road closures. Diamond Lake is a great destination for the winter months, offering activities like tubing, cat skiing, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling to name a few.
