Our second wall was a massive, week-long undertaking by the artist team Jon Stommel and Travis Czekalski known as "Rather Severe." Experience Roseburg was thrilled to host the two Portland-based artists and to see their interpretation of the Roseburg area. The piece can be found by the back entrance of North Forty Beer Co. – on the North wall by Main Street. Completed on August 17, 2022.
Artists' Statement
The imagery in this mural is a mixture of native Oregon plants along with some of our own stylized plant-inspired shapes and abstractions. We aimed to make the design feel as 'lush' as possible. The directional flow moves from the bottom of the wall up toward the top, to reinforce an optimistic energy in the piece. The color palette is designed around greens, with other complimentary colors added to play off of those greens. Mostly we were going for enchanted Oregon forest vibes.
Some of the local flora included:
- Ghost Pipes
- Wood Fern
- Mushrooms
- Horsetail
- Achlys
- Moss
- Skunk Cabbage
- Calfornia Groundcone
- Doug Fir
- Snake Plants
About the Artists
Travis Czekalski and Jon Stommel work collaboratively as ‘Rather Severe’, creating Murals, Illustrations, and Public Art, to inspire their community and enrich the experience of being in public spaces. Their works are a conversation with a wide variety of residential and commercial clients, whom they encourage to share their visions for an art piece and then work with to realize those visions within their own unique visual language. In this way the work creates a direct connection between the artists, their clients, and the communities and places that their artwork becomes a part of.
